According to Dell Technologies, 85 % of the jobs that will exist in 2030 haven't even been invented yet. So then how do we prepare kids for jobs that don't exist? The answer is executive functioning skills. These are essential to be successful in life. They are the tools that help us make decisions, stay on task, create plans and break down those plans into manageable steps. Executive functioning skills also help us reflect on how we are doing and control our impulses in order to meet the goals we created. Basically, executive functioning skills help us get things done, and they almost never isolated - meaning we often use more than one at a time. As adults, we lend these skills to children frequently throughout the day. That's part of WHY you feel so exhausted each day!
Executive Functions:
Goal Achievement
Working Memory
Empathy
Planning
Flexibility
Metacognition
Attention
Time Management
Organization
We all have some of these skills that are stronger and some that are weaker. If you think of a spouse, kid, coworker, friend, etc that annoys you sometimes, you might find that person has the same weakness in a skill that you have. They annoy us because it is difficult for us to lend them a skill we are developing ourselves. The good news is that there are ways to develop our weaker executive functions.
